What Is a Medication Abortion?
A medication abortion, also known as the abortion pill or RU486, is a medical, non-surgical oral pill taken to terminate an early pregnancy. The abortion pill is a combination of two drugs, Mifepristone (an antiprogesterone) and Misoprostol (a prostagladin). It is used in the United States up to 11 weeks of gestation.
Information about Mifepristone for Medical Termination of Pregnancy Through Ten Weeks Gestation │ FDA
How It Works
Mifepristone is taken to block the hormone progesterone, preventing the embryo, placenta and uterus, from receiving the hormone necessary for the normal development of the pregnancy. Misoprostol is taken a few hours or days later to cause the uterus to contract and expel the embryo through the vagina.
A follow up appointment with your doctor about a week later is necessary to confirm that the pregnancy has ended.
